Our Values

Three pillars.
One familia.

Everything we do, every workshop, dinner, and outreach night, traces back to these three values. They're not just words on a wall.
01
Familia

We take responsibility for our collective strength by developing communities, building a diverse and inclusive membership, and challenging each other to be our best.

02
Service

We act on a foundation of service, delivering the highest levels of quality, integrity, and ethical behavior in everything we do.

03
Resilience

We embrace our diverse cultures and communities, which enable us to adapt, thrive, and persist with optimism.

Mission & Vision

What drives us
forward.

SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.

Our vision: a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

Chapter History

Since 1995.

In 1987, Carlos Menjivar of Phi Iota Alpha and Luis A. Gomez saw a need for more Latino representation in engineering at Stony Brook. Together, they envisioned an organization to unite, support, and empower Latinos in the field.

Their first meeting in 1995 launched the Stony Brook chapter, and 30 years later, we're still going strong.
